They have had 47 winning seasons which include 13 District titles, 29 playoff appearances where they have a 22-28 record, and one State title (1988). Since the playoff era started the Hornets have bounced between the 1A and the 2A classifications.
The Hornets call "Death Valley - Where a lot of heros ride into Death Valley but very few walk back up the hill" home, named by their former legendary head coach Granville "Bear" Freeman in 1973 after the famous LSU stadium. Coach Freeman wanted an intimidating atmosphere for when opponents came to Lake and his teams did not disappoint. Coach Freeman and his Hornets were unbeatable from 1973 - 1977 as the had a 35 game unbeaten steak before they were tied 14-14 by South Leake. Freman and his Hornets responded by winning 11 more games in a row before falling to Choctaw Central 7-0 in 1978.
When Freeman left after the 78 season the Hornets kept winning, falling in the South State title game to Enterprise in 1987 and then capping off a perfect 13-0 record by winning the Class 2A State title in 1988.
This years Hornets are being led by Coach Tate Hanna. Coach Hanna will be entering his 8th year as the head coach of the Hornets. Last year Lake finished with a 4-7 record. They finished the season in fourth place in Class 2A District 5. They fell in the first round of the playoffs to Lloyd Star 21-20.
