Mac Hamburg graduated from Enterprise High School in 1961. Mac joined the Marine Corp in 1966. He was killed in Vietnam in 1968. The Mac Hamburg Award was first given in 1978 in his memory, the award is given to the football player that best exemplifies the athletic characteristics of Mac.
In 1961 he received the 10th annual Billy Haywood Award at Enterprise. He committed to Memphis State University, but decided to attend Jones. He played for head coach Sim Cooley's Bobcats in 1963-64. The Bobcats were 7-3 in 1963 and went 9-1 in 1964 and won the first state championship under Coach Cooley. Hamburg was an All-State lineman in 1964. He was a member of the J-Club and Art Club at Jones and received a football scholarship to Louisiana College. After playing football, Hamburg enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, trained at Camp LeJeune (North Carolina) and was sent to Vietnam. On March 18, 1968, Lance Corporal Hamburg was involved in a fierce, 12-hour battle in the Quang Tri Province of South Vietnam. He was among 17 who lost their lives in service that day. Hamburg was awarded the National Defense Medal, the Infantry Combat Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Square Medal and the Purple Heart for his courageous actions that day. Mac was voted into the JCJC Hall of Fame in 2018.
